A few photos of possible semi-interest from my road trip from NJ to Knoxville via non-interstates. It took me 17 hours to do the drive. My daughter and her family who also went, did it in 10 via Interstates.
Highlights of trip were Harpers Ferry, WV for the historic aspect and the rafting/kayaking/swimming in the Potomac/Shenandoah Rivers; the scenic little towns such as Staunton, Lexington, Abington, in the Shenandoah Valley and along Rt.11; the Blue Ridge Parkway (much nicer than the Skyline Drive section in the Shenandoah Park); and just the glimpse of some "americana" left behind by the advent of the interstae highway system.

Located in Rural Retreat, VA. The owner lives in the structure attached to the back of the screen, directly behind my car. Had a nice chat with him.....he is doing a great business.

The "infield" is grass.....much nicer than the blacktopped ones. The place was cut and trimmed to perfection. The screen was in great shape as well.

Photo is a detail of the roadway lighting. This is so great! Regular lightbulbs covered by a Ball Mason jar. I just smiled.

oh! Robert!.. did you go kayaking in Harper's Ferry??--did you go with a livery??... last time we went (on the way back from OBX in May) we saw a lot of kayakers and it looked like such fun and we wished we had time to do that!.. going to do that next time through!..
we took that same route home too---loved the historic towns!
thanks for sharing!

This drive-in is on Rt.11 just north of Bristol. I went there when I was in college and dating a girl who went to Virginia Intermont college in Bristol. Place is still going strong. Couldn't get in to see the infield.

Love the logo on the screen. It appears that the owner/operator? lives in the structure attached to the screen like the Hiland.

This place was in Bristol, VA/TN. Didn't think some of these critters were legally for sale but guess so. Oh yeah, I'll take a couple of black mambas for gifts.

Wow,what great pictures, not too many drive-in theaters around anymore. There's only one left in our area. Our 3 sons take their families like we used to take them but of course it cost alot more than it did when we took them. They laugh when we tell them how many people we could get in a car on dollar per car night and they always let us in.Talk about the "good ole days".Thanks for the trip down memory lane, really enjoyed it.

We are a little over an hour from Bristol/Kingsport/Johnson City area. It is beautiful country. People from my town go to Bristol tot he races alot...I've never been there.

I'm from Burnsville (Yancey County) which borders Tennessee. Banner Elk is aobut 45 minutes from me- but we go through Spruce Pine (Mitchell County) to get to Boone/Banner Elk.

South of Lexington, VA, near Natural Bridge on Rt.11. Had a big cheeseburger, fries and an "bottomless" glass of root beer for $4.15. Wasn't great but was starving. Elvis was on the jukebox, and then more Elvis, then more, and more, more, OMG I'm going to put my foot thru the thing!
The motel behind the Pink was fairly seedy looking for one that had an AAA recommendation. So took a pass and headed down the road.

Love the pics. I like this old theater the best. Question..did you do all this driving yourself? I think you said your wife and daughter took another route? Good for you, if you did! :-)

We have a little main street theater in my town. It shows first run movies for $5 a piece. It is where I saw SW III at midnight on it's opening day. Right now Wedding Crashers and Willie Wonka are the showings.

... drive-ins theaters and diners were excuses for showing off your cool car, Robert.
