smb400 Anon 2004-Nov-28 10:35 am comcast DVR questionwhen i set my dvr to record a pogram, then turn the unit off, when i come back later and turn the everything on to watch tv while the program is recording, everything is muted. there is a small mute icon at the top of the screen, and it is not the same mute icon that my tv shows when it's muted, it looks like it's being generated from the source. and as long as the show is being recorded, everything remains muted, until the recording stops, then i can resume normal audio operations. and yes, i have tried pressing the mute button on both my tv & cable remotes to deactivate the function, but that does'nt work. anybody else experience this?

RMAntala01 Member 2004-Nov-28 11:07 am I think I remember reading in another forum that this is currently a glitch with the 6408 & 6412 DVRs. Only solution anyone seemed to come up with was to not turn off the DVR. Just my 2 cents worth...

andyross to smb400 MVM 2004-Nov-28 5:10 pm The issue is that the box's audio goes into mute mode. Most of the time, the Comcast remote has MUTE and volume set for your TV, not the box itself. If needed, you can program the box's MUTE key to another key you never really use: To test it, hit that key, and you should see a small 'MUTE' show up on-screen, just to the left of where the box puts channel numbers as you type them in. For 30-second skip, do the same, but use code 173 (or 00173?). For swap, use 236 (or 00236). The remote is a One-For-All. You can find all sorts of neat things here:

andyross to smb400 MVM 2004-Nov-28 5:13 pm I forgot that you can also put the MUTE code on a 'shifted' key. To 'shift', you hit the Setup key, then a regular key. To program onto a shifted key, hit setup before the final key. In the above example, after typing 141, you would hit setup then the key (lets say MUTE). To use it, hit setup then mute to send the box's mute code. Hitting mute without hitting setup first would send the TV mute.

andyross to smb400 MVM 2004-Nov-30 5:46 pm You don't even need to map to a key. Just hit SETUP and then the 3 digit code. This will send the EFC (Extended Function Code) for the currently selected device. Here is a list of the codes for Motorola (formerly General Instruments) boxes with setup code 0476: The hifi-remote site has all sorts of info, including instructions on using Macros and more:

jasahl | jasahl Member 2004-Dec-16 11:09 pm Quick question: Suppose I map a key & decide I want the key's old function back? How do i "unprogram it?" |

andyross MVM 2004-Dec-18 5:24 pm You basically map the key onto itself. Press the device key (TV, Cable, etc..) to set the right device To clear all keymoves on a device, hit the device key (TV, etc..) twice instead of a regular key.

xsiveone | xsiveone to andyross Member 2004-Dec-23 1:25 pm Hi. I'm new here. I just had the DVR installed yesterday and experienced the "mute bug" twice. That's what brought me here btw.. For now, I'm just leaving the box on all the time. So.. Let me get this straight since I'm a little confused here. How does moving the mute key function to a seldomly used key fix this mute bug? If I change it, will I still be able to use the mute key if I want to mute the volume? Thanks! Chris |

andyross to xsiveone MVM 2004-Dec-24 10:16 am You don't have to program it to a key, if you have a good memory. Just hit Cable (to make certain it's the default mode), then press Setup (don't hold down), then type 141. That will send the box's MUTE command.

t a c to JimThePCGuy Anon 2004-Dec-29 10:56 pm I agree that I don't want to turn the DVR off, but, I still like to use the remote to turn off the TV. Today, I came home and others had turned thought they turned the TV off, but had turned off the DVR. It then turn on and started to record and I then had the mute problem. I created a new solution for me. I mapped my TV's power button to the Cable button's power function. Now, if I press Power on TV or Cable, they will both turn off the TV and leave the cable DVR on. Here is how I did it: Find your TV's power advance code from here: »www.hifi-remote.com/ofa/ ··· tv.shtml Next, do the following using the power code you found for your TV: 1) Press the "Cable" button at the top of the remote to put it into Cable Box control mode. Just in case I every need to power the DVR on by the remote (after a power outage), I programmed the DVR power button using the shift feature from above.
