Do At-Home Skincare Devices Really Work? (1)

  • At-home devices work with consistency: Regular use of FDA-approved skincare tools can effectively improve skin tone and texture.
  • Select the right device for your skin goals: From LED masks to microcurrent tools, choose what aligns with your needs and existing products.
  • Follow instructions for safe results: Proper usage, cleanliness, and consulting a pro when needed help maximize effectiveness and safety.

Whether on TikTok or YouTube, you've probably seen influencers promoting at-home skincare gadgets, promising to get rid of fine lines or make your double chin disappear. And while certain devices can be effective, you might be nervous about adding something new to your skincare routine without the supervision of an esthetician.

Keep reading to learn more about the effectiveness of at-home skincare devices, as well as my picks for three of my personal favorites, and products that are safe to use with them!

Types of At-Home Skincare Devices

When it comes to taking care of your skin, consistency is key. Whether that means applying routine microdermabrasion treatments or weekly LED sessions, at-home devices have made it easy to keep up with skincare practices that have traditionally happened in-office. Now, some fantastic at-home skincare devices are readily available on the market:

1. LED Light Therapy

One of my go-to at-home skincare devices is theOmnilux Contour. This flexible face mask is equipped with medical-grade LED red and near-infrared light. I recommend clients use the Omnilux Contour three to five times a week for ten-minute incrementsin just a few weeks, you'll notice reduced fine lines, wrinkles, pigmentation, and redness, creating overall healthier, younger-looking skin. With no pain, side effects, or downtime, red light face mask therapy is one of thebest at-home treatmentsout there.

PRO TIP: Pair with the CBE Botanicals Brighten the Day Serum

2. Microcurrent Devices

The very best skincare devices are easy to use, compact, and convenient... and theFOREO Bear 2 Microcurrentface device fits the bill! I love the FOREO Bear 2 for home and travel use, since it's rechargeable and small enough to hold in your hand. If you've started noticing the effects of aging on your skin, this facial lifting device could be perfect for you. You can use it on your face, neck, and decolletage to firm your skin, target and smooth lines, and improve muscle tone. Its proprietary T-Sonic™ pulsations boost circulation and reduce puffiness for a youthful, rested glow I haven't achieved with any other at-home facial toning device. (And who doesn't want that?!)

PRO TIP: Pair with the CBE Botanicals Mist + Conduct

3. Microdermabrasion

Looking for a way to get spa-quality exfoliation at home? Add a microdermabrasion device to your at-home skincare arsenal! TheMBK Microdermabrasionis a powerful device that exfoliates the skin by removing dead skin cells and impurities. Beyond exfoliation, it has a vacuum lift system that increases blood flow to stimulate natural collagen production and reduce the appearance of acne scars and pigmentation. Perfect for glycated skin!

PRO TIP: Pair with the CBE Botanicals Hydrate + Conduct

4. Multi-Purpose Devices

My personal favorite at-home device is theTime Master Pro Ultrasound. It combines three powerful treatments in one convenient gadget: Low Frequency Ultrasound Therapy, EMS facial device, and LED therapy. The Ultrasound function is the strongest available on the market, and vibrates at 90,000 waves per second. This activates your skin's metabolism and regenerates skin cells, resulting in a smoother, more even complexion. The EMS function helps tone, tighten, and smooth your skin with no down time. And since the Time Master Pro has red, blue, green, and infrared LED options, you can adjust the setting to exactly what you're looking for. (I love using blue light on my clients with acne-prone skin, while red and green are great for producing collagen and reducing the appearance of fine lines!)

PRO TIP: Pair with the House of PLLA Promoter Volumizing Gel

How Effective Are They, Really?

Skeptical about the results you can really get with at-home skincare devices? Don't be! While at-home gadgets might not provide the same powerful results as medical-grade equipment, using home skincare tools regularly (and correctly) can seriously improve your skin. (And you'll save time and money, too!)

Plus, just think about how far technology has come. As a practicing master esthetician for over two decades now, I'm thrilled to see how far devices have come, with new research, inventions, and innovations constantly popping up in the aesthetics industry.

Take a look at the improvements my clients have experienced with some of my favorite devices. The results speak for themselves!

Get the Most Out of At-Home Devices

There are a few things you should keep in mind to get the most out of your at-home device:

  • Follow directions carefully. You might be excited to use your new microcurrent device every day, twice a day - but before you rip it out of the packaging, make sure you read the use instructions carefully. It's better to start out cautiously than aggressively... and if you have any questions or concerns, don't be afraid to consult with your esthetician!
  • Make sure devices are FDA-approved or from a reputable source. It can be tempting to easily order something on Amazon or from an influencer on social media... but make sure that whatever devices you're buying are FDA-approved. When a skincare device is approved by the FDA,that means it's undergone testing and evaluation to meet certain safety standards.
  • Be aware of contraindications. Just as certain medications can cause bad reactions when taken together, unwanted interactions can occur with the wrong combinations of skincare devices and products. Make sure whatever gadget you use is safe to use with the other products in your skincare routine.
  • Keep up with device maintenance. From replacing microdermabrasion tips to wiping down your red light mask, make sure you're keeping your skincare devices clean and maintained for best results.
  • Choose the right product for your skin.Every tool isn't right for everyone. If you're unsure of which device can help your skin, talk to a professional before you make your purchase.

Take Your Skincare Routine to a New Level

The right at-home devices can take your personal skincare routine to a whole new level. If you feel intimidated by your new electronic facial device, consult with a trusted esthetician to make sure you feel comfortable, knowledgeable, and empowered.
